Hainan Faces Gambling Setback in Free-Trade Zone Agreement
Hainan was slated to become the second Macau, but in a recent revelation, all gambling will be prohibited in the island province. Dubbed a free-trade zone, Hainan is supposed to be a region where anything within reason is legal that might not be in mainland China. While Hainan has been a huge letdown for the gambling industry, it still serves as a beacon of hope for the Chinese blockchain industry. Several big casinos had been looking into opening up gambling premises on the island, as well as a horse racing track, all plans that will have to be scrapped for now.
China’s Biggest Free-Trade Zone
Set on a whopping 13,660 Square Miles, Hainan will likely become the biggest free-trade zone in China. With the news of its sheer size, gambling enthusiasts were salivating with anticipation to head on over to the island and hit the felt, but Liu Cigui – a Chinese politician – was quoted saying,
Some online comments about opening casinos, allowing gambling and horse-racing, or copy from capitalism and adopt overall private ownership, are divorced from China’s reality and they are resolutely not allowed.
This comes as another massive blow for the Chinese gambling market, as they continually seek for a casino closer to home other than in Macau.
Blockchain Still Welcome
Fortunately, Liu Cigui hasn’t mentioned anything about banning the blockchain movement that appears to be heading to Hainan. Crypto has become a topic of serious debate in the country, and the government has issued a total ban on cryptos. Unfortunately, blockchain can’t really happen without cryptos, so it’s surprising that the blockchain plans for the island are still allowed to go ahead – especially when casinos have been told no.
Chinese Gambling Online Using VPNs
If the government won’t build another land-based casino zone in China, then the people are more likely to use VPNs and head online. In fact, Chinese gamblers are some of the biggest spenders at online casinos, as they have no other way to gamble with their money. This has led to a number of international online casinos providing a site in Chinese and live Chinese support – just like us here at BitStarz.
