While the original authors certainly didn’t intend it to be, Aladdin is an allegory for the lifestyle of millennials. The majority of them are hopelessly poor, living in small shared accommodations with an animal who never cleans up after themselves. They hustle to survive and hope that some magical event will come along to drastically change their lifestyle. That magical event generally involves getting a payout after being hit by a bus, but a genie in a lamp works. Until that happens, though, they’ll continue to find comfort in smashed avo on toast and the latest bingeable Netflix series.

Mystery Genie Fortunes of the Lamp slot isn’t much of a retelling of the origin, but Play’N Go does drag the story into the 21st century by recasting the genie as a woman.

All mystery symbols that land on the reels will, once the spin has been completed, transform into the same paying symbol for a chance to create or boost a winning combination. There is also a chance that individual mystery symbols will reveal a scatter or Sand Respin symbol.

Mystery Genie Fortunes of the Lamp slot offers a shot at winning no more than $60,000 when betting at $10 a spin. That’s probably the smallest max payout of any slot I’ve reviewed thus far this year. As a result, I was surprised to see that it also features medium to high volatility. This is likely driven by the 6,000x max multiplier, but I’m still not sure if this slot’s stats make much sense. It is nice, however, that betting starts at just $0.05 a spin, which is below the average. So, it could be a nice slot to bet really small and enjoy while still chasing a nice multiplier win. The amount won’t pay off your mortgage, but it will buy you a really nice dinner. The slot features an RTP of 96.42%.

I am always skeptical about slots that revisit this very well-trodden theme. There’s almost no way to do anything fresh or unique. That being said, Mystery Genie Fortunes of the Lamp slot does do a lot right. It offers some fantastic graphics and a few really engaging bonus features. I’d definitely place this near the top of my list of Aladdin-themed slots. However, that’s not much of an accomplishment. I think Play’N Go could have done so much more with the resources it committed to Mystery Genie Fortunes of the Lamp slot. In conclusion, and against my better judgment, I give this one a seven out of ten.
