At some point, zombie lore went from “run for your life” to “aww, look at his little exposed brain wobble.” I’m not sure who decided the walking dead needed a rebrand, but here we are, pretending a corpse with commitment issues is adorable because someone gave it big eyes and a goofy walk. Once the stuff of nightmares, now they’re fighting plants in kids’ games.

Popiplay’s new Wild Zombies slot leans into that cutified version of the zombie apocalypse, and it kind of works.

The Brain Lab Respin feature is triggered when three or more Brain Jar Wilds land on a single spin. All Brain Jar Wilds involved in the trigger become sticky, and you are awarded three respins. Only standard symbols and Brain Jar Wilds appear on the reels during this feature.

Each new Brain Jar Wild that lands during the Brain Lab Respin also becomes sticky and resets the respin counter back to three. The feature continues in this way until either no respins remain or the entire grid is filled with Brain Jar Wilds.

Zombie Stacked Wilds appear in both the base game and during a round of free spins. They appear as zombie characters that can occupy up to four rows on any reel. Each Zombie Stacked Wild type carries its own set of multiplier values. 

The Zombie Cheerleader carries multipliers ranging from 1x to 4x. The Zombie Lumberjack offers multipliers ranging from 5x to 20x. The Zombie Doctor offers top-end values ranging from 25x to 200x.

Landing three Scatter symbols awards 10 Graveyard Spins. Four Scatters awards 15 Graveyard Spins. Landing all five Scatters awards a split round of 5 Graveyard Spins followed by 5 Super Graveyard Spins.

During a round of free spins, any Zombie Stacked Wild that lands fully visible on the reels will immediately be converted into a Walking Wild. Walking Wilds then shift one reel to the left with each spin and continue moving until they fall off the side of the reels.

During Super Graveyard Spins, Zombie Stacked Wilds appear with greater frequency. The position where a Walking Wild first lands during Super Graveyard Spins remains locked for the duration of the feature, continuing to generate a new Stacked Wild on each remaining spin. Higher-value multipliers also appear more frequently than in the standard Graveyard Spins round.

Is the Wild Zombies slot worth risking some grey matter?

It does work. It’s entertaining, the bonus features are great, and that’s all brought together with some fun graphics. Honestly, though, I just don’t think it’s treading any new ground here. I swear I’ve seen several versions of this exact slot with a slightly different spin on the bonus features. So, while I think it’s solid, you’re not short on options in this genre. I give the Wild Zombies slot a seven out of ten.
