Manhattan Blackjack Review

You'd think the cops would throw the book at a guy who strung a steel wire 🪢 between the Twin Towers. On August 7, 1974, Philippe Petit, a French street performer, walked it about 1,350 feet up and crossed 8 times in roughly 45 minutes.

His punishment was a free show for the kids 🤹 in Central Park. I get wobbly on a stepladder, so I'll take his word on the view.

Manhattan Blackjack from Beterlive keeps you at a much saner altitude. Both feet stay under a card table, but you get a great view of the skyline 🌃 (don’t ask me which city this is) without the vertigo.

Gameplay

A real dealer runs this table on camera, with 7 seats on the felt. The dealers do look rather bored most of the time, but I guess that’s par for the course when you’re livestreaming a game instead of interacting with physical people.

The RTPRTP stands for “Return to Player.” The RTP describes the total bet amount that a game returns to players over millions of spins, and that figure is represented by a percentage. Table games, such as Roulette, typically have higher RTPs than many slots.

RTP needs to be considered in conjunction with a game’s volatility rate.
is 99.51
%, volatility is low, and the max multiplier is 126x. The max win is $26,300, and it's capped, with bets running from $20 to $5,800.

No currency gets turned away. Per bet type, the Blackjack bet takes $20 to $5,000, Bet Behind takes $1 to $500, Pairs accepts $1 to $200, and Poker 3 will do you for $1 to $100.

The game deals from 8 standard 52-card decks. They're shuffled before they go in the shoe, and at the start of each new shoe the system randomly burns 1 to 10 cards. When the cut card shows up, the current hand gets finished and a fresh shoe comes in.

You're playing against the dealer, not the folks next to you, and the job is to get closer to 21 than he/she (don’t call the pronoun police - I read em like I see em) does without going over.

A Blackjack pays 3:2, so a $10 bet comes back as $25. Any other winning hand pays 1:1. Go past 21 and you're bust, bet gone. Tie the dealer on 17 or more and your bet comes back, and if you both have Blackjack, that's a push too.

The felt spells out the house rule: "Dealer must stand on 17 and must draw to 16." The rules confirm that dealers stand on soft 17 as well (an Ace and a six).

Your buttons are Hit, Stand, Double, Split, and Insurance.

Double is available on your first 2 cards. Your bet doubles, the difference comes out of your balance, and you get exactly 1 more card, even on a split hand.

Split works when your first 2 cards share a value. You put up a second bet equal to the first and play 2 hands, but you can't split again in the same hand.

Split Aces get 1 card each, and an Ace plus a ten-value card on a split hand counts as 21, not Blackjack, so it pays 1:1.

Insurance only shows up when the dealer's 1st card is an Ace. It costs half your original bet and pays 2:1 if the dealer has Blackjack.

If the dealer doesn't, the insurance money is gone either way. Once the insurance window closes, the system checks the hole card automatically.

Then there's 10 Card Charlie. Draw 10 cards without busting and your hand wins automatically. Theoretically possible, the rules say, but I'd love to meet the person who's done it.

You can drop chips on several betting positions at once, and if the Multiple Bets option is supported and betting is still open, extra bets get accepted.

Any open seat is yours to take. Skip a round without betting and you can move seats between rounds, or even during an active round.

Bet Behind only works on positions a main player is already sitting in, and you can't place it alongside your own Blackjack bet in the same round.

You follow the main player's moves automatically. If they Split or Double, your bet doesn't change, and if their right hand wins after a Split, so do you.

Payouts, side bets, and the basics (Hit, Stand, Double, Split, and Insurance) are the same as in Live Blackjack.

Features

PAIRS:

Pairs is a side bet, and like every side bet here, it only opens up after you've placed your main bet. There are 2 separate buttons, Player Pair and Dealer Pair, and each one wins if that side's first 2 cards are any pair.

The pair type sets the payout. A Suited Pair (same suit, like 2 Aces of Spades) pays 25:1, a Colored Pair (same color, different suits) pays 12:1, and a Mixed Pair (one red, one black) pays 6:1.

Limits run from $1 to $200, and the RTPRTP stands for “Return to Player.” The RTP describes the total bet amount that a game returns to players over millions of spins, and that figure is represented by a percentage. Table games, such as Roulette, typically have higher RTPs than many slots.

is 95.90%.

POKER 3:

Poker 3 builds a 3-card poker hand from your first 2 cards plus the dealer's upcard. Land a winning combination and it pays out.

Suited Trips (3 identical cards, like 3 Queens of Hearts) pays 100:1, a Straight Flush pays 40:1, and Three of a Kind pays 30:1. A Straight pays 10:1, and a Flush pays 5:1.

Performance

The streaming signal does refresh every so often, which is great because, at my age, I need to stretch my legs and down a handful of painkillers every couple of minutes, anyway.

Maximum Win

The max multiplier is 126x, and the max win is capped at $26,300. The minimum bet is $20 and the top bet listed is $5,800.

Conclusion

The game's main hand tops out at 3:2 for a Blackjack and 1:1 for everything else. The only bets that pay real multiples are the side bets, with Poker 3's Suited Trips at 100:1 and the Suited Pair at 25:1.

Hitting the 126x max multiplier most likely means those big side-bet hands landing on the same round as a main-hand win. So good luck with that.

And here's some math I did on my napkin. Divide the $26,300 cap by 126 and you get roughly $209. Bet more than about $209 a round and the cap gets there before the multiplier does, so at the top limits it's the cap, not the 126x, setting your max win.

Low volatility with a 126x max multiplier makes sense for blackjack. The swings are small and so is the top prize, which is exactly the deal you signed up for when you sat down.

The 99.51% on the main bet makes this a long-session table. Pairs runs at 95.90%, so every chip you shift over there shortens the night. Poker 3 at 96.30% holds up better.

So… side bets. I'd skip Pairs and keep my chips on the main hand. Poker 3 gets a small chip from me now and then, purely for a crack at that 100:1. Insurance only pays when the dealer has Blackjack, so I'd rather just play my hand.
