Twenty One Review

Twenty One – it’s that magical age when you’re allowed to buy and drink alcohol if you live in the US of A. More importantly, it’s also the age when you can legally gamble, but I’m going to stay on the topic of booze for a moment. 🥃

In South Africa, where I was raised, the legal age for buying and consuming alcohol is 18. And I’m emphasizing “legal” coz in Africa, they tend to adhere to the 11th Commandment: Thou Shalt Not Get Caught. 👮‍♂️

As for Germany, well they’re all about kids destroying their brain cells as early as possible. There, you get to consume and possess fermented alcoholic beverages (e.g. wine and beer) in public places at the age of 14, as long as a Custodial Person is with you. 🍷

And you can ditch the Custodial Person at the age of 16 and go on a bender all on your own – a full 5 years earlier than American kids. Can you say Prost? 🍺

But back to gambling: Join me as I explore the latest from Hacksaw, entitled Twenty One. And yes, it’s a Blackjack game. ♠️♥️♣️♦️

Gameplay

If you’ve read my reviews, you’ll know I’m a big fan of design, innovation, and cool themes. However, I harbor a dirty little secret, which is that I also like stripped-down, no-nonsense, light and easy-to-load games. There, I said it.

Hacksaw’s Twenty One is clearly all about Blackjack and when you fire it up, you’ll see only cards on the screen. No flashy animation, only the vital info you need.

The game is also a great companion for playing on your phone. However, it does have limitations – the fonts on the table above the cards are tiny in portrait mode, and only slightly better in landscape mode.

Speaking of which, you’ll notice that on a desktop device, the Autoplay sits next to the Manual option at the top of the area to the left of the “table.” In the mobile version, you get BET instead.

Now, let’s look at the stats:

  • RTPRTP stands for “Return to Player.” The RTP describes the total bet amount that a game returns to players over millions of spins, and that figure is represented by a percentage. Table games, such as Roulette, typically have higher RTPs than many slots.

RTP needs to be considered in conjunction with a game’s volatility rate.
    : 96%
  • Max Multiplier: 1,500x
  • Max Win: €150,000
  • Accepted Currency: Fiat but no Japanese yen
  • Volatility RateSlot games can have low, medium, high, or extremely high volatility rates (or a combination thereof).

The less volatile the game, the more often it should pay out, but the lower the amount, the less the payout, as this is in keeping with the risk you’re taking. Volatility rate should be considered in conjunction with a game’s RTP.

Features

Twenty One has no features, so I’ll discuss the gameplay here instead.

The aim of the game is to get your revealed cards to add up to 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, or 21 and you’ll see that these numbers are listed in the table above the cards along with the multiplier you’ll be awarded if you get those numbers.

You first need to decide how many cards you want to play with – it could be 2 or 7 – and select your bet. After hitting BET, your cards will be revealed and tallied up and then you’ll see if you’ve won.

Playing with 7 cards is how you can get to the 1,500x max multiplier but it’s also the most risky option as it’s easy to overshoot 21. And in case you were wondering, the cards are drawn from a standard deck of 52 cards.

For those of you who are new to Blackjack, the values of the cards are as follows: number cards’ values are what you see (ie: a 2 of diamonds counts for 2). The Jack, Queen, and King are worth 10. The Ace can count for 1 or 11 depending on what will serve you best.

If you’d prefer to have the software play for you for a determined number of rounds at a specific bet, then hit the AUTO button. Select your number of cards, bet amount, and how many rounds you wanna play for; it’s that easy.

If you want to get more technical, you can also select the Loss Limit, and Single Win Limit but hitting the SHOW MORE arrow.

Performance

Twenty One played smoothly and wasn’t plagued by technical gremlins while I was testing the game.

Maximum Win

Twenty One has a massive spread of bets; it starts at €0.10 and ends at €100. You can win €150,000 from the 1,500x multiplier (if you play with 7 cards) at the max bet.

Conclusion

Twenty One does what it says on the tin without frills, distractions, or complications. Even the rules are simple: land a combination of cards that add up to 16 to 21; what could be easier than that?

If I had a say in the game's design, I’d have made the historical results appear under the SHOW MORE content (on the desktop version) as there’s a large, unused area. Having these results live under the BET button means they’re super tiny and it’s not a great experience.

Also, there’s a white bar at the bottom of the screen on my iPhone that obscures the labels for TURBO, INFO, and partially for HOME in portrait mode, but you can still toggle the buttons. In landscape mode, it obscures HOME and AUTOPLAY.

I enjoyed my time with Hacksaw’s creation, and it gets a thumbs up from me.
