Action Boost: Gladiator Slot Review
One of the weapons you’ll see in Action Boost: Gladiator slot from Quickfire isn’t period-accurate. The wonderfully named Morning Star Flail came into being in medieval times – so around the 13th century – but since when have facts stood in the way of slot game design, eh?
Other than studios that eschew research, we also have modern movies to blame; I’m looking at you, Gladiator. Gladiators, as I understand it, used a gladius (short sword), net and trident, spears, clubs, and so on. 🗡️🔱
Another medieval weapon with a badass name was the Holy Water Sprinkler – named as such because it resembled the aspergillum used in Catholic Mass. 💦 The weapon had a steel head with 6 flanges forming 3 spikes each.
I can see it now. In Nomine Patris – DING – et Filii – BONG – et Spiritus Sancti – WHACK! 🤕
Gameplay
It looks like today is a day for strange game designs and none more so than Action Boost: Gladiator slot. The grid is relinquished to two-thirds of the screen real estate, with the other third being taken up by the Jackpot flags.
And then there’s a black-and-white poker chip placed on top of the Jackpot element that expands into the betting toggles if you click it. If these were my designers, I’d have them fight lions and bears in the arena.
If I thought the game looked rubbish on a desktop device, portrait mode on my phone held more horrors. It’s easily the worst-looking mobile game I’ve ever reviewed on a mobile device; at least in that orientation.
Here, the reels have been incorporated into the Jackpot flags and the grid has been placed at the bottom half of the screen. It’s awful.
Landscape mode mirrors what you see on a desktop and I’ll give the devil his due; the grid and its symbols are fairly easy to see for those of you who like to play on the go.
Action Boost: Gladiator slot is one of 3 versions you’ll find on BitStarz; the other two are Amber Island and Gorilla Gems.
Our current game offers 40 paylines, an RTPRTP stands for “Return to Player.” The RTP describes the total bet amount that a game returns to players over millions of spins, and that figure is represented by a percentage. Table games, such as Roulette, typically have higher RTPs than many slots.
RTP needs to be considered in conjunction with a game’s volatility rate. of 96.27%, and a high volatility rate. The most you can win is €250,000 and the max multiplier is 6,250x. At least the stats are solid.
Accepted currency is limited to fiat money with the exception of the Japanese yen.
Colosseum Wilds replace all symbols that aren’t Bonus ones and they also nudge to stay on a reel if they’re teetering. High-paying symbols are the gladiator, the purple horse, the chariot, the axe, and the morning star flail.
Features
With each spin, green, red, and purple Coins are collected in sacks on top of the reels, and Trophy Coins will be collected by the Trophy symbol which sits atop the Jackpot flags.
FLAG SPIN FEATURE:
Whenever a Trophy Coin lands, it could randomly trigger this feature in which case you’ll get a single spin.
If a Coin, or Coins, land on the flags, this will trigger the Action Boost Free Spins and it’s the combination of Coins that land that determines the type of Action Boost that’s awarded.
Flag spins can also award one of the Jackpots; namely the Mini, Minor, Major, or Mega.
ACTION BOOST FREE SPINS:
Free Spins happen randomly when the reels begin to shake. You’ll see one bag in particular get highlighted and that’s the feature from the below that’ll come into effect. You’ll also see only the corresponding flag to the left.
Green Coin Action Boost:
- Awards 5 spins
- Each Gold Coin that appears during this feature gets you a Bonus Credit prize or a Flag Spin (one spin for each Coin)
- The Spin will award a bonus credit or upgrade a single symbol to the status of Gladiator for the round
- All reels will grow to a height of 6 symbols
Red Coin Action Boost:
-
Awards 10 spins
-
Each Gold Coin that lands will award a Shield, Bonus Credit, or Flag Spin (one spin for each Coin)
-
Flag Spins will award Shields, Bonus Credits, or Jackpot Boosts (the latter will increase the respective Jackpot value for the round)
-
6 Red Shields = the Mega Jackpot
-
5 Purple Shields = the Major Jackpot
-
4 Blue Shields = the Minor Jackpot
-
3 Green Shields = the Mini Jackpot
Purple Coin Action Boost:
- Awards 5 spins
- Each landed Gold Coin awards 1 or 2 Free Spins, a Bonus Credit, or a Flag Spin (one spin for each Coin)
- Flag Spins will award a Bonus Credit, and 1 to 3 Free Spins
- On each spin, a random multiplier of 2x, 3x, or 5x is awarded
Multiple Coin Action Boost:
- In this feature, Free Spins are played with all of the Action Boost options
- If the Red Coin Action Boost is triggered, you’ll get 10 spins; else, you’ll get 5
- The Purple Coin Action Boost’s random multiplier applies to all line wins and Bonus Credit prizes, but not to the Jackpots
Performance
I swapped between devices and browsers while testing Action Boost: Gladiator slot and it didn’t make a difference.
Maximum Win
You can bet from as little as €0.20 to €40, and the latter in combination with the max multiplier (6,250x) will bring in the top prize of €250,000.
Conclusion
Initially, I was full of venom, but this game grew on me – there you go, I admit it.
Having said that, I don’t like this whole random-feature-triggering thing; I’d rather work toward a goal and see how far I am away from it as that builds anticipation and excitement.
And, of course, the way the game looks on a mobile phone held vertically is vile. I will admit that the desktop and landscape views weren’t as bad as I initially made out, even though I still feel they could’ve done the design differently so that the grid size doesn’t get sacrificed.
As this isn’t your typical game with regular features, I’d advise new players to steer clear. Look, it’s not that difficult to digest once you get into it, but it will be intimidating for you initially. And the game’s a highly volatile one, so you should probably take it easy for a while anyway.
