Gameplay
Ah, Nolimit City; the studio that stomps around where others fear to tread. Bless them. They’ve gone full horror story with Blood & Shadow slot, but I guess the name gave that away already.
Skulls and candles surround the 5x3-reel grid in what looks like a gothic cathedral, while the symbols are made up of freaky, hellish creatures.
One symbol you’ll be happy to see is the Sticky Wild skull, which appears on reels 2 to 5. During Candle Spins and Cursed Spins (I’ll explain these below), Wilds will drop to the bottom of the grid and stay put until they form part of a winning combo.
What’s interesting to note is that there are high-paying symbols as well as medium- and low-paying ones.
There’s no music, only sound effects, so I ended up leaving it on for a bit of drama. As for mobile play, you can rock this game on any device but it is dark in color (and content) so visibility could be a bit difficult for some.
Peeling back the skin, we find paylines ranging from 1,024 to 3,125 and a 96.13% RTPRTP stands for “Return to Player.” The RTP describes the total bet amount that a game returns to players over millions of spins, and that figure is represented by a percentage. Table games, such as Roulette, typically have higher RTPs than many slots.
RTP needs to be considered in conjunction with a game’s volatility rate.. The max win is monstrously large, at €399,960, and that of course means the volatility rate has been set to extreme.
All currencies are available and Blood & Shadow slot uses a Tumble mechanic, meaning that winning symbols are removed so others can take their place for possibly even more wins.

Underneath the grid, you’ll see what’s known as the Ritual Bar and it has 5 levels. You’ll bump yourself up by collecting Scatters and winning combos made up of medium- and high-paying symbols.
It works on a point system:
Medium-paying symbols = 1 point per winning symbol
High-paying symbols = 2 points per winning symbol
Scatter symbols = 10 points per Scatter
To get to the next level, you’ll need the following number of points:
- Level 1: 20 points
- Level 2: 30 points
- Level 3: 40 points
- Level 4: 60 points
- Level 5 80 points
When you reach a new level – up to Level 4, that is – you’ll be awarded 2 Candle Spins. Reaching the Cursed Spins level (Level 5) awards 6 Free Spins.
XSPLIT:
Activated during Level 5 (Cursed Spins), when an xSplit lands it’ll split either a row or a reel. This action multiplies the symbol size by 2x. You can get multiple xSplits on the same row, but not on the same reel.
CURSED SPINS (FREE SPINS):
When you reach this level, you’ll get 6 spins and the Ritual Bar will be removed. The grid will turn into a 5x5-reel one and that’s why your paylines increase to 3,125.
Only high-paying symbols will land now and each landed Scatter will award 1 extra spin.
BUY BONUS:
You can part with some of your moolah to fast-track yourself into one of the following:
- Lucky Draw (55x your bet): Land up on Level 1 to 5
- Baphomet Rite (66x your bet): Receive 6 spins and go to Level 3. Also, 3 low- and medium-paying symbols will be replaced by high-paying ones

Performance
Performance wasn’t an issue on Blood & Shadow slot. The game carved its way through all the spins I sent it, without missing a beat.

Well of course the max win is 6,666x – how could Nolimit City resist doing this? Couple that figure with a bet of €60 (that’s the amount bets are capped at but you can start at €0.20), and you’re looking at a gargantuan, hulking, lumbering €399,960 top prize!
Conclusion
Progress bars and levels aren’t standard fare for Nolimit City, so seeing this addition in Blood & Shadow slot has been interesting.
It also helps build excitement – and frustration – as you watch the red line come within a whisper of a level-up, only to be reset. And getting the Ritual Bar to Levels 4 and 5 will take a herculean effort along with lots of time and money, but that’s to be expected, I guess.
What I would’ve liked to see is some sort of indicator that works as a visual reference for the levels. I know you can figure it out based on the number of points but you’ll only know that if you read a review or the game’s notes.
Look, Nolimit City games are tough but that’s because they offer huge incentives. The type of player who I feel would be attracted to this game will probably have deep pockets, enjoy the occult theme, and be in it for the long haul. And that’s not most people.
If it’s you, however, then by all means give it a whirl – it’s an excellent offering.
