I used to be mystified and enchanted by this theme, but not nowadays. I still love the Chinese people and their fascinating heritage, but this slots overused theme was a handicap in my eyes. It would have to be darn good to earn this Professor's stamp of approval.
Caishen's Gold is a video slot created by Pragmatic Play. OK – tick one – that's a good start: I'm a big fan of Pragmatic Play. Over the years they've had some gems and I was suddenly filled with a glimmer of hope. Tick two – this is a multi-platform slot so players can play anytime on just about any device. Tick three – the atmosphere from the start is very evocative, and I felt like I was transported to the hills of China (Man, have I visited there a lot online over the years – how about management pays for a real trip?)
Seriously though – the scene is set very well here.
Gameplay
This is a 5 reel and 243 payline slot. That's right – all you slow and steady profiteers are salivating, as you should, because this low volatility slot represents a great way to build profits.
The symbols are: 2 kids (by that I mean children, not baby goats), lotus flower, fan, Ruan (a Chinese guitar – for the history of it you have to attend my lecture) and 9-A card symbols. There's also a wild symbol which is Caishen himself, and that can replace anything except the scatter, which is a gong. (*nb – a gong is a Chinese percussion instrument. Not a bong, that's a bit different...)
The layout is superb – headed up top by the 4 Jackpot Payout Amounts – Grand, Minor, Mini and Major. At the bottom are Game Settings (including QuickSpin), Info, Credit/Bet amounts, Autoplay and Spin. The Spin button has a plus and minus on either side making it simple to increase or decrease your bet.

Performance
Caishen's Gold blitzed through all my benchmark tests. The graphics add to the theme nicely, and so does the music, which is not annoying at all. (I usually mute a slot or destroy the speakers after listening for 20 minutes.)
Conclusion
Caishen's Gold won this weary warrior over. I wasn't expecting to like this slot, let alone love it. But, both the Jackpot Bonus Game and the Free Spins are innovative and give players a real chance for decent profits. If you're a fan of the theme – then run to this slot, you will adore it. Even if you're not, I'm pretty sure it will still become a favorite.
