I'm a bit of a victim of trivia thirst. I love useless facts, so whenever a game review comes up with an interesting theme, I salivate with anticipation. But, I also get to torment you with my trivia!
The Flying Dutchman is a mythical ghost ship, with tales of it originating from the 18th century. The ship itself was meant to have sailed with the Dutch East India company in the 1600's.
Many sightings throughout history tell of a glowing ghostly ship, crewed by the dead. A sight of impending doom, the Dutchman was feared throughout the world.
Obviously, we're familiar with the flying Dutchman via entertainment - everything from Pirates of the Carribean to Scooby Doo to the Simpsons have mentioned the dreaded boat.
What a bunch of poppycock (says the land lubber).
Flying Dutchman is a gorgeous video slotcreated by Amatic for us to enjoy on P.C, mobile device or tablet. I could almost feel the sea breeze on my face as I began. This game breathes elegance from the start, and I suddenly felt myself dreaming of taking to the high seas. All I would need is enough money to buy a boat, the time to learn to sail and some courage…

Gameplay

Flying Dutchman is a 5 reel and 50 payline slot with low volatility. The standard symbols are headed by the hunky captian and beautiful damsel. Joining them are a seagull, pendant, ship and face card letters. There are also two special symbols:

• A bonus sign (scatter) and a wild sign. The wild can substitute for all symbols except the bonus.
  On occasion, Amatic controls are lacking in aesthetic appeal, but not here. These are embedded into a wooden frame and enhance the visuals. On the upper right are Help (including Paytable info) and settings (Which oddly enough consist only of a full-screen option).

Below the reels are Balance, Lines, Bet, Max Bet, Autoplay and Spin. On either side of the Spin button, you'll find a plus and minus which is used to adjust your bet size.
There is no turbo spin.

3 or more Bonus symbols bring about 15 retriggerable Free Spins, with the wild as a supersize symbol.

Unique Features

Supersize symbols appear on reels 2-4 and are able to cover all positions on a reel. During regular play, the sailor, lady and ship are the supersize symbols. (During Free Spins the wild is also)

Performance

The gently rolling ocean background was a brilliant highlight for me. That's not to say the graphics aren't superb in their own way, but that ocean set an evocative mood which is tough to match. The music and sound effects were a bit too generic for my liking (hello mute button!).
Flying Dutchman sailed through all my performance tests without a glitch.

Conclusion

This video slot has a great theme and superb gameplay. Couple that with an innovative feature like the supersize symbols and you've got a winner.
