Gem Star Slot Review
When it comes to online slots, we love games that go all-out when it comes to colour. Catching our attention and representing one of the more colour-loaded slot games in recent memory is Gem Star. Amatic has clearly looked to the stars in this new title, as it appears to be an outer-galactic themed release that is simply bursting with brightness.
Games that like to showcase a healthy colour palette aren’t exactly uncommon. However, we have seen far too many of these games put forward great visuals, only for a hollow gambling experience to lie beneath the surface. So, does Gem Star go beyond its colourful visuals to offer an all-thrills slots experience? The following review reveals all!
Gameplay
Jumping right into Gem Star, you’ll find that the gameplay actually defies the game’s somewhat simple animations. For starters, players can activate up to 100 paylines across the 5 reels, which means that you can really ramp-up the base game action as you please. Looking at what it’s going to cost you to get these 100 paylines rocking, you can bet between €10 and €1,000 on a single spin. What’s a touch disappointing is that the control panel in Gem Star isn’t exactly flexible, with it actually being pretty annoying to use at times. There’s no minus button included, so to get the wager or payline level you’re after you have to pretty much cycle through every available option, which makes overshooting a common occurrence.
Finding the paytable isn’t exactly the easiest either – for reference it’s accessed by hitting the two “?” buttons – but it does make for pretty reading when found. Across the rather basic looking symbols, you have a red lucky seven orbiting a planet, a colourful wild star, a purple bar sign, and an amber stone – along with emerald, amethyst, sapphire, and ruby stones - to enjoy. With payouts hitting the mid to low thousands, in Gem Star real cash wins certainly aren’t in short supply, even if the paytable is rather flat looking.
Features
The base game in Gem Star is packed with pizzazz, but the same can’t really be said for its bonus features. This Amatic title is pretty lacking, with the wild multi-coloured star symbol being the only real special feature of note – mainly because it can be retriggered. To do this, you need to find three of these wilds on screen together. You also have a gamble feature to make use of as well, but it’s case of if you’ve seen one gamble round you’ve seen them all, so no surprises here. Again, Gem Star is anything but innovative when it comes to bonus features, but in the interest of fairness this isn’t the game’s selling point.
Performance
Here’s where the wheels start to come off Gem Star, while there is no denying just how colourful this game is, its design is pretty woeful. The outer-space backdrop is probably its only redeeming feature, as the symbols look flat. The game doesn’t really perform much better, with the stuttering soundtrack and simplistic animations hardly being engaging. Flat and uninspiring, the UI of Gem Star needs a lot of work if it’s going to match up to other aspects of the game.
Conclusion
Talking about the elephant of the room, Gem Star is pretty low-par looking slots game. The design of this game is lacking in practically every department, with the bright colour palette probably being the only thing worth shouting about. However, you should never judge a book by its cover, as Gem Star has a jackpot that can put rival games on the back foot. For all the negatives attached to the game – looks and bonus features included – the action-packed base game and bumper jackpot certainly ensure that Gem Star is still well worth a try!
