Gladiators Slot Review

I woulda lasted about 90 seconds in a gladiatorial arena. The combination of having molasses like reflexes and a somewhat nervous disposition would not have served me well!
What's got me thinking of all this? Well, it's Endorphina's Gladiators – a video slot designed to bring the ancient action to your PC, mobile device or tablet.
But first – some useless facts! Did you know:

  • There were female gladiators. Long before Ronda Rousey, there were kickass chicks pitted against other women, men or even dwarves!

  • Some Roman emperors fought in the arena. Yes, it's true. Not surprisingly, the hapless souls pitted against them never dared to land a blow.

  • Gladiators were not all slaves or pisoners. Initially they were, but as the phenomenon grew, more and more working-class men signed up. After all – gladiators were the celebrities of the era!

Before beginning this game, I pictured Russell Crow types (when he was in shape, not the flabby years) battling it out to the death using a variety of odd weapons. Instead, this slot features sea creatures taking their places as the iconic warriors. Huh? Someone was smoking some good %!
There's a strange feeling when you start playing. Looking at the graphics one expects a satire which will match the bizarre nature of what's presented, but, it's all quite melodramatic. I found that really funny, but wasn't sure if that's what the creators intended.

Gameplay

Gladiators is a medium volatility 5 reel and 21 payline slot. The standard symbols consist of various sea creatures in the midst of battle, together with seaweed ridden 10-Ace icons. A joker wreath is the wild, able to substitute for all symbols except the scatter, which is a bonus shark logo.
The controls match the color scheme of the game, but not the theme. Up to is the Credits display, while below the reels are Bet, Menu, Total Bet, Auto, Spin and Lines.
Don't try to rush the fighters, because you won't be able to – there's no Turbospin.

Features

  • After each winning spin in regular play, you get the chance to double your profits with a high card choice. Simply beat the value of the dealer's card to win.

  • 3,4 or 5 scatters anywhere activates 10,20 or 50 re-triggerable Free Spins, each with a 2X multiplier After each
Free Spin, the gladiator with the most symbols on the reels wins that round. (If the number is the same there's a chart in the Paytable Info which explains the priority in which they are chosen.) Each like symbol position is awarded the wreath (wild), which stays for the following Free Spin. The wreath is removed if, after the spin, no gladiator stops in its position.

Maximum Win

The Maximum Win in Gladiators is 300 000 coins! There's nothing fishy about that!

Performance

There's nothing groundbreaking about the graphics and animation, but they are enjoyable enough. The sea creatures are so serious in their battle mode that it's tough not to find them endearing. I found the music and sound effects a tad overly dramatic – I mean these are fish in full battle gear, how can it NOT be a comedy?
Smooth sailing on all devices was the result of my performance tests.

Conclusion

Gladiators is a bit like that enigmatic girl in high school – sending mixed signals all the time, but still very appealing. At first glance, it looks like humor will be active in the game, but it's drama all the way. Once I got used to that, I realized that the Free Spins were excellent and I still found the game funny. So I think you'll enjoy it, because despite the odd theme, those fantastic Free Spins are just too enticing!
