Gold King Slot Review
“Be careful what you wish for.”
The fable of King Midas may have been the origin of this saying. According to legend, Midas was awarded any wish he desired by a grateful God Dionysus. Midas requested that everything he touches turn to gold. Dionysus asked him if he was sure if that was what he truly wanted. Midas said “Yes move it along and hurry up.” Dionysus pressed and asked again :” Really dude – are you 100% certain?”
Now at this point, anyone with half a brain should realize that the omnipotent being is hinting at something ominous. Oh no - tot dumbass Midas.
Once the wish was granted, Midas was initially ecstatic as he quickly accumulated vast wealth. An Alchemic touch and there transformed everything around him into gold.
Shew – all that work made him a bit peckish, so he sat down for some lunch. The problem was that food turned to gold as it touched his lips. (While this may seem like a breakthrough diet, there was clearly some trouble on the road ahead)
Then - “Daddy I want a hug goodnight!” asked his daughter, before embraced him. Whoopsy Daisy, she's was now a valuable gold statue. Sure, there are no school fees or worries about future boyfriends – but at some point, he'd miss her!
It was clear, even to the somewhat dim-witted Midas, that this blessing was indeed a curse. He begged Dionysus to lift it and the God, who was no doubt laughing his ass off, obliged by ordering Midas to bathe in the Pactolus river. By doing so, he turned all the river sand in gold but was restored to normal. (No word on the daughter statue – maybe it's on sale via eBay)
Gold King is a Play'n Go video slot designed to work on all devices. It pretty much glosses over all those life ruining aspects of the story and concentrates on the wealth Midas accumulates. (Did the White House Press Secretary have anything do with this game?)
There's so much bling in this slot that I expected to see Liberace bathing in the background. There's also no realism, but rather a definite aura of wish fulfillment. This wasn't altogether unpleasant and set me off daydreaming about unattainable levels of wealth.
Gameplay
Gold King is a 5 reel and 20 payline slot with medium volatility. All the symbols are naturally entirely or partly gold: crown, pendant, gold bars and 10-Ace icons are the standard symbols. The Gold King himself is the scatter and the only symbol which cannot be replaced by the wild – which is a rose.
A fault of many slots is that the controls are a bit modern looking for the theme and the Gold King falls into this trap. However, the controls are very functional and user-friendly. Lined up along the bottom: Info (including Paytable), Balance, Bet Adjustor, Bet Amount, Spin and Autoplay. Further down: Settings, Fast Play and displays in the currency chosen (Balance/Bet/Win).
Features
3 Scatters anywhere triggers 10 Free Super Spins. During these Free Super Spins, 1 2 or 3 scatters appearing on the reels activates 2, 4 or 10 additional Free Super Spins (with no limit!).
But that's not all folks – during Free Super Spins, the wild appears in stack of 5-7 on each reel, while the 10-Ace icons appear in stacks of 8! The gold bars, pendant and crown appear as expanding icons, filling 3 spaces on the reel they land on.
Unique Features
-
Any spin in regular play could be randomly turned into a Golden Spin during which reels 1, 2, 3 and 5 are filled with super stacks.
-
In each round in regular play, one random standard symbol fills 12 consecutive spaces on each reel!
Maximum win
The maximum win in the Gold King is 500 000 coins. (That can buy a lotta bling…)
Performance
The graphics in Gold King are obviously very gaudy, so while they're tough to admire, I have to admit that they are very well rendered. I wasn't a big fan of the sound effects and music though – viva le Mute button!
Regarding performance, Gold King was perfect on all 3 devices tested.
Conclusion
They say that all that glitters is not gold, but this slot lives up to its promising shine. Sure the concept is pretty lame, and the graphics are a bit tacky – but its still pretty and loads of fun to play. The most critical aspect of this game though is that it's got inventive player rewards that will keep you glued to the screen. Enjoy!
