Golden Dragon Slot Review
Shew – a Ancient Chinese themed video slot. How novel and original… (can you sense the sarcasm dripping off those words?) Seemingly we have an insatiable appetite for this genre as I have spent a great portion of my adult life reviewing them. And don't get me wrong: Ancient China is a period in history which fascinates me and is deserving of homage. However, right now we've gotten to an over-saturation of the theme, so the slots themselves need to stand on their own regarding quality. Golden Dragon is one such offering from GameArt. It's designed to work on all devices, and there's definitely a feeling of dejavu when the main screen loads, because, we've all played so many slots of this theme. That soon disappears though as Golden Dragons excitement levels are higher than expected. For me, it stirred not only my usual craving for Peking Duck but also strong anticipation for what lay ahead…
Golden Dragon is a low volatility slot with 5 reels and 50 paylines. All the primary symbols are golden: phoenix, tiger, dragon, fish, bowl, and bat (as in the animal, not as in baseball or cricket – that would just be weird). They're also joined by the face card letters as lower paying icons. The dragon is a stacked wild and can replace any symbols except for the scatter which is the bowl. Controls are lined up below the game screen: Settings, Paytable, Bet Per Line, Autoplay, Spin, Balance, Total Bet and Win amount. There's no Turbospin, but shouldn't we all be slowing down a bit and enjoying life more?
After a winning spin in regular play, you get the chance to Gamble your profits on a red/black card choice. Choose correctly and your profits are doubled, while an incorrect choice forfeits profits.
The scatter appears on reels 2-4 but when 3 of them appear, not only does it pay 4X your total bet, but you trigger 5 Free Spins. During Free Spins, high pay reels with frequent dragon stacks are used.
The dragon itself, being a stacked wild, brings an energy to the slot, together with some fantastic wins.
The graphics and animations dazzle in their splendor while the music is fairly low key – until a win, at which point, combined with the sound effects a barrage of excitemen. Performance wise I experience zero issues on 3 devices tested.
Golden Dragon breathes new life into a somewhat tired genre. It retains player engagement far better than many slots with the same theme. That, combined with an excellent scatter multiplier, stacked wild and Free Spins makes this slot worth trying. Now if you don't mind, I have to excuse myself, I haven't even started my spring rolls and my Peking Duck is getting cold.
