Grand Melee Slot Review
In the bad old days, we used to go to concerts and get involved in moshes. For those of you who don’t know what that is, it’s what they do at metal gigs or concerts and it involves jumping or slamming yourself into the next person fairly violently. 🤘🎸
Now if you combine moshing with headbanging, you’re in for a treat. It was commonplace for headbangers to headbutt someone during a fray, so people got black eyes and bloody noses as a reward. Admittedly, it ended up looking like Bedlam most of the time.
And god forbid you went stage diving and the crowd was in a nasty mood coz they just wouldn’t catch you or they’d move out of the way.
And when your crumpled form was lying on the floor along with cigarette butts, beer cans, and unmentionable bodily fluids, that was usually when you’d start examining your life choices. 🚬🍺
But now, onto a chaotic and disorganized fight of another kind: Grand Melee slot from Thunderkick.
Gameplay
A Medieval crowd has come out to watch the action on the 6x4-reel grid of Thunderkick’s latest game. The design is rich, colorful, and stunningly detailed, as is the way of this Swedish studio.
The square shape of the playing area lends itself perfectly to mobile play and in portrait mode, you lose some of the additional design elements, which means you can focus on the game itself. The controls are simplistic and large, so they’re easy to use if you play on the go.
There’s a lot to get through so let’s jump quickly to the stats:
- PaylinesPaylines are preset lines that run across the reels, and when you land matching symbols on them, that will result in a payout. The more paylines, the more ways you can win, but also the higher your bet per spin.: Up to 1,193 ways to win
-
RTPRTP stands for “Return to Player.” The RTP describes the total bet amount that a game returns to players over millions of spins, and that figure is represented by a percentage. Table games, such as Roulette, typically have higher RTPs than many slots.
RTP needs to be considered in conjunction with a game’s volatility rate.: 96.17% - Max Multiplier: 5,000x
- Max Win: €250,000
-
Volatility RateSlot games can have low, medium, high, or extremely high volatility rates (or a combination thereof).
The less volatile the game, the more often it should pay out, but the lower the amount, the less the payout, as this is in keeping with the risk you’re taking. Volatility rate should be considered in conjunction with a game’s RTP.: High - Accepted Currency: Fiat only, no Australian dollar
Features
STICKY RE-SPINS:
This feature can trigger whenever it feels like it and when it does, it’ll select a random symbol – just not the Symbol Upgrade, Symbol Expansion, or Game Area Expansion symbols – and pop that chosen one above the reels.
Land 5 or more of the selected symbol and they’ll turn sticky and stay locked in position. During the ensuing re-spin, any other identical symbols will also lock in place while the rest of the symbols re-spin. This action only stops when no new instances of the selected symbol appear.
SYMBOL UPGRADE:
When the Symbol Upgrade symbol appears – it has a pink banner with a star and two swords stuck in it – it will transform all visible symbols that are the same as the sticky ones mentioned above into more valuable sticky symbols.
SYMBOL EXPANSION:
This symbol – it’s an orange banner – will turn into the current sticky symbol type when it lands, but it can also expand vertically to cover an entire reel with sticky symbols.
GAME ARE EXPANSION:
This blue bannered symbol will also change into the current sticky symbol type when it lands but it then adds an extra row at the bottom of the game area (the max is 7 rows). This row will contain a random set of symbols.
FREE SPINS:
You’ll trigger this round if you land 5 or more Bonus symbols. Alternatively, you can trigger the round during the Sticky Re-spin feature if the Bonus symbol appears in the area above the reels – which means it’ll be sticky during the re-spins.
Re-spins will happen until no more of these Bonus Scatters land. As for how many Free Spins you’ll get, that’s determined by the number of Scatters in view. The Free Spins game can also be re-triggered.
Performance
I’m happy to report that there were no loading issues or glitches while I was testing this game.
Maximum Win
The stats are strong with this one: there’s a 5,000x max multiplier which, when coupled with the largest bet you can make (€50) will result in a top prize of €250,000.
P.S.: The lowest bet you can make is €0.10.
Conclusion
Hats off to Thunderkick for their stunning design and for trying something different. 👏 This game, however, requires patience. There’s no Turbo option and Sticky Re-spins happen randomly so you’re not in control of when they’ll decide to bless you.
Having said that, they did come in with some regularity while I was testing, as did the Free Spins.
Usually, I’d say that adding a Buy Bonus would’ve been great but not so with Grand Melee slot. The Free Spins round isn’t all that special.
This isn’t a game I’d recommend for newcomers as it’s possibly a bit too different if you’re still wrapping your head around how slots work. But if you’re a player who is willing to wait it out, then the rewards can be significant.
