As a kid and still as an adult I have always found the circus a bit creepy. We all know about the animals and animal cruelty etc etc. To my mind the creepy dark side though, are the human entertainers. It seemed to always be such a dark world of dodgy characters behind cakes of makeup. I think it stems from a night performance I went to when I was about 6. I had just watched this over-the-top glamorous show. At the end, I needed to go and had to walk through some of the caravans. The clown I have seen half an hour before had a cigarette hanging out of his mouth with no wig on just scrappy old hair, and the glamorous acrobat, also with a cigarette and no lashes was screaming at him. Using language, I didn't understand, and their kid was crying on the bed. Signed sealed and delivered the end of my love for the circus.
