Julius Maximus: Legend of the Arena Slot Review
By all accounts, the most famous gladiator was Flamma, a Syrian secutor (someone who fought with a sword 🗡️ and shield 🛡️). He achieved an incredible record of 21 wins, 9 draws, and only 4 losses (remember, not all losses ended in death).
But the strangest thing about Flamma was that he was offered his freedom numerous times but he declined; that’s how dedicated he was to his craft. Flamma went on to remain unbeaten for 13 years – now that’s utterly remarkable. 🤯
What’s also remarkable is the 25,000x max multiplier 🎉🥳 in Julius Maximus: Legend of the Arena slot from Quickfire!
Gameplay
A gladiator squares off against another dude who is woefully ill-equipped. But that’s how life was back in ancient Roman times; no tree huggers were pontificating about fairness and equality. Nope, the great unwashed crowds wanted blood, and that’s what they got.
The 5x3 grid in this game is flanked to the left by various Jackpots. The Mini pays 10x, the Minor pays 20x, the Major pays 100x, and the Grand Jackpot kicks it up a couple of notches to 20,000x.
Above the reels are some modifiers: More Coins, More Jackpots, More Diamonds, Start Level 2, and Inception. But more on these later. Oh, and did you check out the SPIN button? It’s a wishbone – in keeping with the studio that crafted the game. Pretty cool!
And now for some stats:
- PaylinesPaylines are preset lines that run across the reels, and when you land matching symbols on them, that will result in a payout. The more paylines, the more ways you can win, but also the higher your bet per spin.: 20
- RTPRTP stands for “Return to Player.” The RTP describes the total bet amount that a game returns to players over millions of spins, and that figure is represented by a percentage. Table games, such as Roulette, typically have higher RTPs than many slots.
RTP needs to be considered in conjunction with a game’s volatility rate.: 96% - Volatility RateSlot games can have low, medium, high, or extremely high volatility rates (or a combination thereof).
The less volatile the game, the more often it should pay out, but the lower the amount, the less the payout, as this is in keeping with the risk you’re taking. Volatility rate should be considered in conjunction with a game’s RTP.: Medium - Max Multiplier: 25,000x
- Max Win: $250,000
- Accepted Currencies: Fiat only, no yen or ruble
Looking at this game in landscape mode is the same as on a laptop, so it’s not only familiar, but the controls are easy to get to and there’s enough space for all the elements to breathe.
Portrait mode sees the combatants shift to the top of the screen, so the grid is a bit smaller than is optimal but it’s OK. The only thing is now the colors are all very similar, but it’s not a train smash; you can still discern what’s going on.
The Wild symbol replaces all symbols other than Scatters and Special symbols. Scatters are made up of 5 different pieces of armour, and landing a Scatter is what could trigger one of the reel modifiers.
Each Armour Scatter you collect fills a meter around its respective reel modifier. Unlocked reel modifiers that get triggered will participate in the Bonus game, locked ones won’t.
Then there’s the Sword Scatter (look for the word “Bonus”). These can only land on reels 1 to 4, and may unlock the Bonus game. As for the Coins and Diamonds, these are only available in the main feature, so I’ll chat about these below.
Features
BONUS GAME:
Whenever a Sword symbol hits, it’ll be given to the gladiator without the weaponry (the Hero). A fight will now ensue between the two gladiators.
If the Hero wins, the Bonus feature will trigger, and a random reel modifier (or more than one) will come into play – as long as it's been unlocked. Unlocked reel modifiers will see the Hero gain a helmet, shield, or other items, but he can lose these in a losing bout.
The grid will expand from 3 rows to 5 rows and you get 3 lives (hearts) to start with – new Diamond symbols landing will reset the spin counter, so this is really a Hold and WinThis feature plays out on a new screen. Typically, you get 3 re-spins (which could be re-triggered), and the triggering symbols usually stick to the position on which they land. Your objective is to land as many symbols as possible on the grid (you could land blank tiles, too). game with a twist.
Coin and Diamonds (the non-Jackpot versions) can have values of 0.2x to 5x.
You’ll see our Hero gladiator now has a frame around him. If a Coin lands within this frame, its value will be collected. When a Diamond lands on the reels, the Hero will move his ass over to the Diamond and collect its value.
Diamonds that are collected are represented in a meter or trail to the right of the grid. There are sections in this meter that denote 2x2, 3x3, 4x4, and 5x5, and they require a specific number of Diamonds to be collected.
Accumulating the requisite number of Diamonds for each section grows the frame around the Hero. For example, collecting 5 Diamonds grows the Hero frame from 2x2 to 3x3. You start collecting at the bottom of the meter and work your way up.
Unfortunately, only the locked reel modifiers will be in effect during the round; you can’t unlock subsequent ones.
Now, let me explain each modifier in greater detail:
- More Coins – pretty self-explanatory
- More Jackpots – this one, too (you can land more Jackpots more often)
- More Diamonds – more Diamonds land during the Bonus game
- Start Level 2 – the Hero’s frame is increased to 3x3
Inception – an extra re-spin is awarded whenever a Diamond lands anywhere on the reels. All Coins and Diamonds that land during the extra re-spin will lock in place. The re-spin ends when no more Coins or Diamonds land
Diamonds can also land with one of the Jackpot names on them. The Hero will go and fetch the Diamond in the same way he does regular ones, and that’s what earns these prizes.
Performance
Loading time was sweet on all of my devices, and I didn’t encounter any glitches or issues worth mentioning.
Maximum Win
Landing the Max Win Sword symbol and having the Hero win his fight results in you scoring the 25,000x max multiplier. The max win is $250,000, and betting ranges from $0.20 to $10.
Conclusion
I love a game that’s a bit different. Sure, we’ve seen slots where gladiators duke it out, but you don’t see this kinda thing often, and I’m a guy – I like duels/sport/betting.
I enjoyed watching the Hero gladiator gain more armour and fight – sometimes winning, often times not. It builds anticipation and engagement, as is the case with the Bonus game.
Offering 25,000x on a medium volatility game is amazing and there’s not much to complain about when it comes to the game’s stats.
The “weaknesses” of the game centre around our inability to unlock additional reel modifiers and, of course, there’s no Ante BetAn Ante Bet is an option that costs a percentage of your bet but increases your chances of landing triggering symbols that initiate a feature. or Buy Bonus so grinding is the only way we can get into the Bonus round.
You’re going to need disciplined session and bankroll management, and fortunately, the RTPRTP stands for “Return to Player.” The RTP describes the total bet amount that a game returns to players over millions of spins, and that figure is represented by a percentage. Table games, such as Roulette, typically have higher RTPs than many slots.
RTP needs to be considered in conjunction with a game’s volatility rate. lends itself to longer sessions.
