Magic Dragon Slot Review

It's been about 9 days since I had to write a review about a video slot based on Ancient Chinese Culture. That's a record amount of time! Being the most popular slot theme, usually, a review request on one comes almost daily.
Phew. I was suffering withdrawal symptoms. (That's sarcasm, but unfortunately, there is no “sarcasm font” to make it clear. Wow – that's a great idea! A “sarcasm font”! Genius!)

Anyhoo, back to the topic at hand. Right about now I give you the schpeel about how I find Ancient China fascinating, but the theme itself is overused, etc. etc.

Do you just feel like I'm going through the motions with this review? Well, Boo-hoo – what did you expect, “War and Peace”? ( I suppose a more apt book to put in that question might have been “The Art of War”)

Down to the nitty gritty: Magic Dragon is a video slot by GameArt that's designed to work on your P.C, mobile device or tablet. As we've established the theme is somewhat lacking in originality, so the game itself would have to win me over. Surprisingly, it did.
The feeling I got when starting the game was somewhere between being part of a Chinese celebration and deciding whether to order the spring rolls or Kung Pao Chicken. The reason behind this is that the décor is festive, yet somewhat reminiscent of a Chinese Restuarant.

Gameplay

Magic Dragon has 5 reels and an astounding 243 paylines, making it one of the least volatile slots available. Special symbols are the dragon which is the wild and a lettered coin which is the scatter. The standard symbols are a red dragon, green dragon, gold coins, goldfish, red pockets and 9-Ace icons. As in most slots, the wild can substitute for anything except the scatter.
The GameArt controls work well but appear a bit too modern for this theme. It's all neatly laid out along the bottom: Settings, Paytable, Bet Multiplier, Autoplay, Spin, Balance, Total Bet and Win Amount.

Features

After each winning spin there's a gamble option in which you can wager your profits on a simple double or nothing bet revolving around card color choice. Should you wish to disable this feature, that can easily be done in Game Settings.
The Free Spins feature is an astounding aspect of this game and comes into play frequently. After 3 or more scatters have activated your re-triggerable Free Spins, you get to choose between 5 options, each having different multipliers applied on all substituting wild wins:

  • 10 Free Games: 10X, 15X or 30X

  • 13 Free Games: 8X, 10X or 15X

  • 15 Free Games: 5X, 8X or 10X

  • 20 Free Games: 3X, 5X or 8X

  • 25 Free Games: 2X, 3X or 5X

During these Free Spins, red pocket symbols appearing anywhere on reels 1 and 5 pay an bonus of between 2X-50X your bet amount!

Performance

The graphics and animations are excellent but are limited somewhat by the genre. Music and sound effects are a bit more low key than I expected, but that was a pleasant surprise. There were no performance issues in any tests conducted, in fact, this game cruised through.

Conclusion

Yes, I know – it's yet another slot based on Ancient Chinese symbols and myths. We've covered that point ad nauseam, but Magic Dragon is well worth a spin. It's Free Spins feature comes around very often and offers incredible winning potential. Just order your Chinese take-out first because once you get a glimmer of the décor, the cravings are gonna hit...
