San Quentin 2 Death Row Slot Review

Let’s face facts: the one character in San Quentin 2 Death Row slot from Nolimit City is a dead ringer for Danny Trejo 👀. You know it, I know it. Let’s move on because I’ve written about Danny in an intro before, so I’m taking a different route this time.

In fact, this is all the intro you’re getting 😱 (and I appreciate that by saying I wouldn’t mention Danny, I did and so this intro is therefore similar to a previous one. Whatever). And that’s because this is – as you might expect –a long, intricate game.

So I’ll leave you with this teaser: the max multiplier is 200,000x. That’s not a type-o. 🤯

Gameplay

I was going to rabbit on about how excited I was to finally get my sacrilegious paws on a Nolimit City game, but never mind that. Did you see what the max multiplier is??? I’m in shock. I don’t think I’ve ever seen something so insane in the realm of slots.

And “insane” also happens to be the volatility rate. Which is a bit extreme as the potential payout is $320,000, but games such as Dragon King Megaways slot and Neptune's Champions slot offer the same amount, but for a medium to high, and medium volatility rate, respectively.

I might as well mention the last two stats: 1,024 paylines and a 96.13% RTPRTP stands for “Return to Player.” The RTP describes the total bet amount that a game returns to players over millions of spins, and that figure is represented by a percentage. Table games, such as Roulette, typically have higher RTPs than many slots.

RTP needs to be considered in conjunction with a game’s volatility rate.
.

Even before firing up this game, I imagined a scene with barbed wire and security cameras and shit, and that’s precisely what we’ve got.

The 5x4 grid is positioned on the back of a transport vehicle that’s entering one of the US’s most notorious prisons – where Danny served time, as it turns out.

There’s also a nod to Better Call Saul or Breaking Bad. When the bus enters for the first time during the splash screen, you’ll see a poster for a mean-faced dude (Att. Payne N. Sufferen) that says, “’Accidentally’ killed your cuz? No prob, give me a buzz.” I love these little touches.

A bar of soap is one of the hilarious symbols to appear on the grid, along with some dice, a comb, a pair of latex gloves, and an empty toilet roll.

You know this game will be complex, so let’s be done with the foreplay and get to the action!

Features

ENHANCER CELLS:

There are locked positions above and below each reel; these are the Enhancer Cells. When they unlock they could reveal a Wild, a Razor Split, an xWays symbol, or 1 of the 5 high-paying symbols.

Razor Splits slice a symbol on a reel so that it becomes two symbols. If Razor Splits land above and below a reel on both Enhancer Cells, the symbols are split twice.

If a Razor Split slices a Bonus Scatter, the latter transforms into a Wild, and the row is split.

Lastly, xWays symbols will reveal the same regular pay symbol, but these will be stacked 5 symbols high. If you have an xWays symbol landing on both Enhancer Cells, the whole reel will be covered by 10 Wilds.

The question remains: how do we unlock an Enhancer Cell? That question will be answered next.

BONUS SYMBOL:

The Scatter can land anywhere, and if you hit 1 or 2 of them in the base game, they’ll transform into Wilds and open the Enhancer Cells on their reel.

SPLIT WILDS:

Split Wilds can appear anywhere in the base game. These symbols will split all regular symbols on the same reel, but the Split Wild won’t split itself.

GREEN MILE (FREE) SPINS:

Landing 3, 4, or 5 Bonus Scatters will trigger the Green Mile Spins feature and award 1, 2, or 3 Jumping Wilds and 8 spins. OK, this is different…

But before we go further, let’s backtrack. When the round initiates, you’ll get to choose: do you want to keep the Jumping Wilds you’ve been awarded or do you wanna gamble for an extra one?

Losing the gamble results in the loss of 5 spins, in addition to no extra Jumping Wild. If you’re successful, you can keep gambling until you win 5 additional Jumping Wilds – but it doesn’t end there. You can then risk losing those 5 Jumping Wilds or play for a shot at the max win!

Once you get into the Free Spins round – after gambling or if you decide to play it safe – you’ll get a single spin to select a specific high-paying symbol. That bad boy will receive a multiplier for the duration of the round, whenever it lands.

The number of Jumping Wilds (JW) you end up with determines how many reels with Enhancer Cells (EC) you’ll be playing on: 1 JW gets 3 reels with ECs, 2 JWs get 4 reels, and 3, 4, or 5 JWs get 5 reels with ECs. Plus, Jumping Wilds 4 and 5 start with a 2x multiplier.

During the round, landing a Scatter on a reel with a locked Enhancer Cell will unlock it, and the Scatter will transform into a Jumping Wild.

You can re-trigger spins, too: 2 to 5 additional Scatters award 3 to 6 more spins.

JUMPING WILDS:

Let’s explain what these are; they’re Wilds that move to random positions with every spin. A Jumping Wild that lands on a reel with a Razor Split will have its multiplier doubled (and it stays this way for the rest of the round).

BUY BONUS:

No, the Buy Bonus option isn’t that yellow star – like I thought, that icon shows you all of the wins on the current game or all Nolimit games. Instead, the Buy Bonus is the red lightning bolt, which isn’t the turbo spin (that’s situated under the SPIN button).

  • Option 1: pay 100x for Green Mile Spins with 1 Jumping Wild
  • Option 2: pay 500x for Green Mile Spins with 2 Jumping Wilds
  • Option 3: pay 740x for a 40% chance of nailing 1 or 2 Jumping Wilds, or a 20% chance of hitting 3
  • Option 4: pay 2,500x for Green Mile Spins with 3 Jumping Wilds

Alternatively, you can pay 2x for a single Scatter, or 45x for 2 Scatters, as part of the Nolimit Booster. These are Ante Bets that will be active until you switch em off.

Performance

I encountered no problems during testing.

Maximum Win

Thanks to that utterly insane 200,000x multiplier, the betting range is a mere $0.20 to $1.60. You stand to win $320,000.

Conclusion

Goddamn, where do I even start? I guess I’ll begin with some high-level observations.

Almost anyone should be able to play San Quentin 2 Death Row slot because we can all afford the $1.60 max bet.
That max multiplier… I’ve run out of superlatives.
The game’s not as offensive or divisive as one expects from this studio.

So, is this game a step up from the original one, launched in 2021, which offered a 150,000x max multiplier? Yes, with regard to the multiplier, but the top prize has dropped from $360,000 to $320,000.

Then there’s the addition of the Jumping Wilds, which you can gamble. Oh, Nolimit City, you foul temptress. The studio has kept the Enhancer Cells and Razor Splits, so there’s a definite attempt to stay faithful to the original instead of going in an entirely different route.

So, in my opinion, the game has moved on. Not tremendously so, but enough to justifiably be a follow-up.
