Space Donkey Slot Review
Do you guys remember Midway Games?
Maybe I’m showing my age here, but they were basically behind all the video games 🕹️back in the day. I’m talking about Tron, Pac Man, and Rampage. Oh, do you remember Rampage?
We would go to the local arcade and challenge each other for hours☺️. Except when we were on vacation, the older kids used to dominate it and wouldn’t even let one of us younger kids challenge the winner😡.
We eventually got so sick of it that, because the nerd behind the counter refused to do anything about it, we devised a plan.
Our gang had started coming in early to try to get as much game time in before the older guys showed up and bullied us off the games we were playing.
One of our crew members could make himself vomit 🤮 on command. So we fed him 2 liters of the weirdest colored milkshakes🥛 from the shake stand next door, and when the older kids arrived, he vomited bright blue sludge all over their shoes.
It was glorious! 🤣
We got beat up outside the arcade after that. And the dork behind the counter banned us for a week. But it was worth it!
I suspect the crew at Nolimit City would approve of our antics given their disturbing creativity. They forgo the horror theme in Space Donkey slot and instead create a love letter to the 80s and 90s console games.
Gameplay
Space Donkey slot takes all its cues from classic arcade games. This is a mash-up of a lot of different titles from the 80s and 90s, but the main inspiration looks like it was Duke Nukem.
At the start of the game, there is even a little conversation between the invading alien and the game’s ape pilot protagonist, Monkey, that’s reminiscent of the opening chat between Duke and Dr. Proton.
In the base game, which looks like it was lifted straight out of 1942, you play on a 6x6 grid. There are 5 high symbols: Monkey, a fighter plane, an alien, a laser gun, and bullets. And there are 46656 ways to win.
When symbols form part of a win, they explode, the symbols above drop in, and new symbols drop in to fill the gaps.
As with most of NoLimit City’s titles, there are way more special symbols and features, so I’m going to run through the game’s important stats so we can get into them.
Space Donkey slot has an RTPRTP stands for “Return to Player.” The RTP describes the total bet amount that a game returns to players over millions of spins, and that figure is represented by a percentage. Table games, such as Roulette, typically have higher RTPs than many slots.
RTP needs to be considered in conjunction with a game’s volatility rate. of 96.07% and high volatility.
The betting range is €0.20 to €24. The most you can win here is a generous €351,576, and you’ll need to bet the most you can and hit the game’s best possible multiplier of 14,649x.
Features
WILD
The Wild symbol is called the Abduction Wild and is a UFO that appears on reels 2 to 6. When it forms part of a win, it doesn’t explode and stays on the reel for the next symbol drop.
The WIld will move down the reel, abduct all the normal paying symbols, and increase its multiplier value by +1 for every symbol removed.
SCATTER
The Scatter symbol is a dynamite time bomb, and landing 3 will trigger the Hide N’ Seek feature.
Landing 4 Scatter symbols will trigger the Seek N’ Destroy feature.
CHOPPER SYMBOL
During the base game, Chopper symbols can appear on reels 2 to 5.
If you land 3 or more, you’ll trigger the Hellfire feature.
HELLFIRE
When triggered, from left to right and down the reels, the first Chopper symbol shoots in 1 of 8 possible directions (forward, back, left, right, and diagonally).
The second Chopper symbol will fire twice in different directions.
The 3rd chopper will shoot 3 times. And so on and so on until all the Chopper symbols have fired their guns.
Every symbol hit will receive a multiplier boost between 2x and 10x.
HIDE N’ SEEK
In the Hide N’ Seek feature, the game takes you to a different 6x6 grid that looks more like the original side view Duke Nukem.
The grid operates like Pac-Man or Donkey Kong, where the edges of the grid are connected to the opposite edge, so you can move off the grid and appear on the opposite end.
The three bananas above the reels indicate that you have three lives when the game first starts.
On every spin, you’re shown a random direction, up, down, left, and right, and a random number of “steps” or positions you’re going to move for that round.
The symbols that appear during the Hide N’ Seek feature that Monkey will encounter as he moves around the grid are:
- Trap symbol: This will take one Monkey’s 3 lives and then disappear.
- Teleport symbol: Is revealed by the Grey Chest symbol and triggers the Seek N’ Destroy feature.
- Grey Chest symbol: Will randomly award an extra life, a multiplier value, or a Teleport symbol.
- Golden Chest: This awards the multiplier value it displays.
There are also other character symbols.
- Magician symbol: If you move to an adjacent position to the Magician, it will award the total sum of all visible Golden Chests.
- King symbol: Encountering the King symbol will multiply the values on the Golden Chests around it with a random 1x to 20x multiplier.
- Princess symbol: The princess collects the values of any Grey and Gold Chests around it and kills the Alien symbol if it is next to it.
- Stone Monster symbol: This affects 3 random positions on the grid. Golden Chest symbol multipliers are doubled; Grey Chest symbols reveal their prize, and it kills the Alien.
- Alien symbol: The Alien symbol moves one step towards Monkey after it’s moved. When it reaches Monkey it takes a life and disappears.
The Alien symbol also collects multipliers when it crosses paths with the Chest symbol. When it encounters one of the other characters, it adds 1x to its value.
Trap symbols also kill the Alien symbol, which leaves a Golden Chest symbol next to the Trap with its accumulated multiplier value. The Trap symbol does not disappear.
If it is killed by the Princess or Stone Monster, it distributes its value equally to any Golden Chests around its starting position.
SEEK N’ DESTROY
Any of Monkey’s lives left, past 1, will convert to extra Monkey shields in the Seek N’ Destroy feature.
During this feature, you’re taken aboard the alien mothership with 5 rows and 6 reels. Above reels 2 to 6, there appear random multipliers between 1x and 10x.
Monkey appears only on reel 1 and moves randomly between rows on each spin, firing one of his randomly selected weapons to kill the advancing aliens.
Aliens start on reel 6 at the Launch Tubes and move one position towards Monkey on every spin. They have varying amounts of hit points and carry a multiplier.
When they’re killed, Monkey collects their multiplier after it’s been multiplied by the random multiplier above the reel.
Monkey possess a number of different weapons with varying firepower:
- Link Gun: Takes one life off of all aliens of the same kind. If none of that alien is present on the reels, you fire at 2 Launch Tubes.
- Laser Gun: Takes the life off of all aliens in that row, including the Launcher Tube. If it’s upgraded, it also kills aliens on an adjacent row.
- Nuke: Takes a life off all of the aliens in one reel. If the reel doesn’t have any aliens, it fires at an adjacent Launch Tube. If it’s upgraded, it will fire twice.
- Rail Gun: Instantly kills the closest alien in that row. If upgraded, it fires twice.
To upgrade your weapons, you need to collect a Booster symbol. Booster symbols also come out of the Launcher Tubes and move along one position per spin, the same as aliens.
You collect the Booster symbol when it reaches reel 2, and Monkey appears on the same row. Booster symbols award a Shield or a Weapon Upgrade.
If an alien reaches reel 2 and Monkey appears next to it, you lose a shield or a life. This feature ends when Monkey has no more lives or Monkeypendence Day is triggered.
MONKEYPENDENCE DAY
During the Seek N’ Destroy feature, the Launcher Tubes on reel 6 have 3, 4, 5, 4, and 3 bars in their batteries.
These are actually the motherships hit points. If you shoot the Launcher Tubes enough and manage to knock out all 5, you trigger the Monkeypendence Day feature.
You’ll be instantly awarded a 5x, 10x, 15x, or 20x multiplier from the alien leader’s Golden Chest symbol.
This multiplier value is applied to your total accumulated multiplier, and you’re returned to the base game after being awarded the total multipliers applied to your bet.
Performance
I tested Space Donkey slot out on my gaming laptop and Android phone, and it was a blast on both.
Maximum Win
The bets range from €0.20 to €24. You can win up to €351,576, but you'll need to bet the maximum and hit the game's best possible multiplier of 14,649x.
Conclusion
NoLimit City has once again pushed the limits of what a video slot game can be.
Space Donkey slot combines all the nostalgia of old arcade and Nintendo games and mashed them together to make an incredible slot.
The base game is a seemingly average ways slot with a couple of cool features, like the Chopper symbol adding multipliers to symbols around it.
The real fun and money-making potential of the game are revealed in the two Bonus games.
Hide N’ Seek plays like a side-platform game, where your character moves around the grid randomly on every spin, and every symbol it encounters can mean a lost life or even better symbols to collect.
Seek N’ Destroy is bonkers; your character moves between rows, trying to off as many approaching enemies as possible before they reach you and the round ends.
And you can kick off the Bonus games using the Bonus Buy feature.
In conclusion, this is an epic slot you need to try at least once, and I’m positive it won’t be the last session you play.
