Sumo Sumo Slot Review

It makes my black heart leap with joy when game studios come up with a backstory for their games. Not only does it save me the effort of engaging my grey matter – and let’s be honest, thinking is overrated – but it also saves you from having to read a bunch of drivel.

The story behind Sumo Sumo slot from ELK Studios is as follows: the Yokozuna (that’s the Grand Champion) is holding a non-traditional game to celebrate the final night of battling. OK, not much of a yarn but it thinly sets the scene.

I’m already intrigued so it’s time to strap on my mawashi (what do you mean you don’t own a Sumo loincloth?) and get to grips with this novel game.

Gameplay

Man, I love how this game has been designed. I mean, look at it! The level of detail is stunning, and the animations – which I’ll describe fully in the features section – are some of the finest I’ve seen.

But to expand a little on what I’m trying to get at, the way the characters interact with each other is so seamless that it gives the game an animated movie feel.

A subtle element, which is sheer genius, is the use of square fruit as symbols. The Japanese have been producing and selling cube watermelons for ages.

It’s not a well-known fact, so I love that ELK has woven this in for us to discover. But they’ve dropped the ball elsewhere, which I’ll get to in due course.

The Wild W replaces all symbols other than the Bonus and Free Spins ones. Wild Sumo appear stacked and even do battle with each other.

Moving on from the looks of the game, Sumo Sumo slot offers 259 ways to win, a medium to high volatility rate, and a max win of €150,000. Unfortunately, the RTPRTP stands for “Return to Player.” The RTP describes the total bet amount that a game returns to players over millions of spins, and that figure is represented by a percentage. Table games, such as Roulette, typically have higher RTPs than many slots.

RTP needs to be considered in conjunction with a game’s volatility rate.
is a dismal 94% which kinda ruins things.

Another disappointment is that crypto players won’t be able to do their thing here; sadly, it’s fiat or nada.

Features

WILD SUMO STACKS:

You’ll see adjacent or winning Sumo symbols of the same kind jump on each other’s backs to create Wild stacks. To be more specific, these are walking (they move across the grid) multiplier Wilds that also bring respins with them.

By the way, the multiplier is based on how many Sumo are in the stack.

Now, if Wild Sumo Stacks of different types are on the same row, they’ll face each other and duke it out. The largest stack will win the brawl, but the ultimate winner is you as the battle results in massive multipliers.

Similar Wild Sumo Stacks combine but the net result is the same (bigger multipliers).

FREE SPINS:

Hit 2 Free Spin Scatters and you’ll be awarded 6 spins. Wild Sumo Stacks will stay where they are, and you can retrigger the round for 6 more spins.

SPEEDBOAT BONUS FEATURE:

So this is where things take a turn for the weird. Like, what does Sumo have to do with speedboats? Sumo wrestlers aren’t even allowed to drive cars in Japan and that’s a true fact.

Another is that there are no bald sumo wrestlers as they need to be able to create that iconic topknot, and Sumo can’t have tattoos. So ELK has dropped the ball there as they’ve included both in their symbology.

Be that as it may, landing 3 Bonus symbols gets you into this Hold & Spin feature. You’ll start with 3 spins on a 5x5-reel grid, and a Speedboat icon will appear while the other positions spin.

The Speedboat Sumo’s objective is to save the lives of the other Sumo or collect other symbols, and each one brings something special to the party:

Swimming Sumo: Saving them collects their values
Wakeboard Sumo: When collected, these will add their value to that of the Speedboat Sumo and stay attached to this homie. Additional Wakeboarders increase the counter to the right of the grid
Harpoon / Turbo Sumo: These dudes will add their value to all the uncollected Sumo or Wakeboarders, and also add value to the Speedboat
Ramp: Grabbing this symbol multiplies the Speedboat value as well as the Wakeboard counter

Yeah, the above isn’t easy to follow, and I’m giving you a synopsis of what happens so that it’s less complicated than it is. Because it’s very intricate.

X-ITER:

An ELK standard, this option – if it’s available in your region – lets you jump into different game modes:

Free Spins: Pay 500x your bet to trigger this feature
Super Speedboat Bonus: Pay 100x so that all Harpoon Sumo dudes are also Turbo Sumo
Speedboat Bonus: Pay 50x to trigger this feature
Brawl Mode: Pay 10x for a guaranteed Brawl
Bonus Hunt: Pay 5x for an increased chance of nailing the Speedboat Bonus or the Free Spins round

Performance

Sumo Sumo slot performed better than a wrestler on a wakeboard. It flew through the hundreds of rounds I played on both my devices, and on Safari and Chrome, with no problems.

Maximum Win

Playing at a sustained €6 (which is pretty doable, right?) and landing the 25,000x multiplier will reward you with €150,000. Or if you wanna, you can downgrade your bet to €0.20 or anything in between.

Conclusion

I flat-out loved this game, despite the shocking RTPRTP stands for “Return to Player.” The RTP describes the total bet amount that a game returns to players over millions of spins, and that figure is represented by a percentage. Table games, such as Roulette, typically have higher RTPs than many slots.

RTP needs to be considered in conjunction with a game’s volatility rate.
(you’ll need to decide if that’s a dealbreaker for you). It's novel and beautifully rendered but rather complicated, which might not appeal to newbies or you folk who need to understand the gameplay in granular detail.

Me, I generally hit the SPIN button and see what happens. I don’t understand how a TV works, but I watch it anyway.

Without a doubt, Sumo Sumo slot gets two thumbs up from this guy.
