The Oldest Oak Slot Review

South Africa is a country with a mix of cultures and languages. One of the weird expressions you’ll hear there is “oak” and it’s used in a similar way to “buddy” or “guy” or so on. They’ll say, “That oak can’t drink!” or “Don’t give that oak a cent; he’s dodgy” or whatever.

It’s an Afrikaans thing that confuses the hell out of people visiting South Africa for the first time.

The Oldest Oak slot from Casino Technology is also perplexing. It’s a mashup of themes and ideas and there’s a mismatch that is an integral part of the game; one that might affect your evaluation of it. It certainly impacted mine.

Gameplay

The Oldest Oak slot serves up a generous helping of Bluegrass music… why? It looks more like we’re in some enchanted forest than in backwater Alabama. In fact, I’d venture to say that the theme Casino Technology has gone for is an animal version of Robin Hood.

So again, how all of this ties into the game's title is beyond me. It seems like the studio just threw some ideas in a hat and mashed a bunch of things together.

There’s nothing subtle about this game, either. The controls are HUUUUGE and in your face, and the 5x3-reel grid is imposing.

As a result, I was expecting that the game would look great on a mobile phone, and while it looks decent in landscape mode, portrait mode is abominable.

There’s more bad news, I’m afraid. The volatility rate is high but the most you can win is €100,000. Wow. And the largest multiplier is only 2,000x. The last stat is the RTPRTP stands for “Return to Player.” The RTP describes the total bet amount that a game returns to players over millions of spins, and that figure is represented by a percentage. Table games, such as Roulette, typically have higher RTPs than many slots.

RTP needs to be considered in conjunction with a game’s volatility rate.
which comes in at 95.35% and there are 25 paylines.

This is a fiat-only game, but unfortunately, the New Zealand dollar and Japanese yen are not accepted.

Features

FREE SPINS:

The symbol that triggers this feature is a golden… I really don’t know how to describe it. It looks like tendrils in the shape of a tree. Let’s just say it’s not the Acorn or the Green Wild and leave it at that.

The symbol is a Scatter or a Wild, depending on the situation, and you’ll need to land 3, 4, or 5 of them to trigger the Free Spins round – in each case, you get 15 spins. Again, that’s a bit strange; more Scatters usually mean more spins.

Free Spins can be re-triggered by landing 3 to 5 additional Scatter Wilds for 15 more spins. When the symbol is in its Wild form, it substitutes for all symbols other than the Green Wild or the Acorn.

The Acorn only appears in the Free Spins round on reels 1 to 3. When it lands, the Acorn cracks and Acorns spread to their adjacent positions – as long as the Golden Tendril Scatter Wilds or Acorn Wilds don’t occupy those positions.

And yes, Acorns can also be Wild symbols. Those positions that are filled with regular Acorns, as well as those occupied by Acorn Wilds, will transform into Green Wilds.

Green Wilds also only appear during Free Spins, but they will take up a position on reels 2 to 4. Green Wilds substitute for all symbols that aren’t Golden Tendrils or Acorn Wilds.

GAMBLE FEATURE:

You’ll be offered the chance to gamble after each spin with a win less than 10x your bet. Hit the X2 button and you’ll be presented with a face-down card.

If you guess the correct color of this card, you’ll double your winnings. If you guess the correct suite, you’ll quadruple your winnings.

If you’re on a winning streak with your guesses, you can keep going until you reach 50x your bet. However, just one wrong guess means you’ll lose everything you’ve made up to that point so cashing out before that time is vital.

Also, you can gamble just half of your current bet, which is a good compromise.

Performance

I’m happy to report that there were no issues during testing.

Maximum Win

Betting starts at €0.25 and is capped at €50. Combining the largest bet with the 2,000x multiplier will mean a payout of €100,000. Which is not great for a highly volatile game.

Conclusion

Nope, I wasn’t impressed with this game and that’s due to the volatility rate/top prize mismatch. I was also put off by the whole disjointed feel of it – not that that’ll worry most of y’all but it bothers me that the title, music, and theme don’t line up.

It gives the impression that The Oldest Oak slot was slapped together with no care or thought.

Then there’s the confusing Free Spins round with its symbols that identify as different things. That you can get your head around, though, and in this day and age, we should be quite accustomed to all this fluidity. 😉

But yeah, the slot scene is filled with far better games so The Oldest Oak slot isn’t one I’d revisit.
