The way in is the Crown landing on a reel that is already part of at least 1 winning payline. TrueLabs' wording says: "Expands and substitutes for any regular symbol on the line when the reel is involved in at least one winning payline."
The order of events matters. The Crown has to be sitting in a win first, and only then does it stretch over its whole reel, at which point that reel reads as Wild on every line crossing it and other lines in play can complete too.
Which reels the Crown turns up on isn't stated anywhere in the rules.
Performance
Exciting this game was not, but I'll take slow and steady and reliable most of the week anyway.
