Monster Money Slot Review

You've probably sat through a rainy weekend with nothing to do, and so did one Lord Byron. In 1816 a volcano 🌋 had wrecked the summer, so he kept his guests inside a villa by Lake Geneva and said: Wouldn’t it be fun if we wrote a ghost story?

Byron gave up on his. An 18-year-old Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein 📖, and in 2021 a first edition sold at Christie's for $1.17 million 💰. My rainy weekends mostly produce memories of failure followed by tears.

Monster Money slot from Yggdrasil brings that infamous green-skinned monster back but this time he’s got a few friends in tow. I'd settle for a small slice of that Christie's money - just putting it out there if the money gods are listening.

Gameplay

The reels sit in a riveted steel-gray frame in front of a purple-and-pink castle. Bats flutter across the sky, trees stretch their gnarled fingers toward the moon, and I’m doing my best to write like a horror story author worth their salt rather than the hack I am.

The 5x3 grid has 20 paylines, the RTPRTP stands for “Return to Player.” The RTP describes the total bet amount that a game returns to players over millions of spins, and that figure is represented by a percentage. Table games, such as Roulette, typically have higher RTPs than many slots.

RTP needs to be considered in conjunction with a game’s volatility rate.
is 94%
, volatility is medium/high, and the max multiplier is 5,000x. The max win is $250,000, with bets from $0.10 to $50. The game is only available in fiat currencies, so leave the crypto wallet in the dungeon.

At the bottom of the paytable, the 10, J and Q symbols pay 2.5x for 5 of a kind, 0.5x for 4 and 0.1x for 3. The A and K pay 5x, 1.2x and 0.1x.

Any Monster (Hand from the Addams Family) pays 10x for 5, 2.5x for 4 and 0.5x for 3. So, in other words, any of the Monsters (I’ll describe these in a sec) pays as I’ve described. The Eyeball and Potion pay an identical 25x, 5x and 1x.

The Coffin pays 50x for 5, 7.5x for 4 and 1.5x for 3. The Gravestone tops the regular symbols at 100x, 10x and 2.5x, and it even pays 0.2x for 2.

The Monster Hunter is the Wild and pays 500x for 5, 10x for 4, 2.5x for 3 and 0.2x for 2. It substitutes for everything except the 2 Bonus Scatter symbols and can land on any reel.

The catch is that the Wild only shows up in Free Spins and Max Play mode. Two versions of the Hunter appear, and the rules don't say what separates them. Each Monster symbol carries a cash value, as a multiple of your base bet.

The Hand (him again) pays 1x, 2x, 3x or 4x. The Mummy pays 5x or 6x, the Werewolf 8x or 10x, Frankenstein's Monster 15x or 20x, the Red Vampire 25x, 35x or 50x, and the Gold Vampire 100x, 200x, 500x or the full 5,000x max multiplier.

That cash is paid when a Monster Hunter lands anywhere on the reels.

If several Hunters land, each one pays the total sum of every Monster on screen. This is what the whole slot runs on, and you can win it in Free Spins or in Max Play mode.

Features

MAX PLAY:

Max Play is the base game's headline act. Hit the Max Play button and you get an alternative version of the base game at the same bet, playable across the same range of bets.

The Monster Hunter joins the reels and switches on the Monster awards. From then on the reels hold only Monsters, Monster Hunters and Bonus symbols.

Every other regular pay symbol gets swapped for the small Pumpkin, which "has no associated prize value" - according to the studio’s info.

FREE SPINS:

Land 3 or more Bonus symbols anywhere in view and Free Spins trigger. Three gets you 10 Free Spins, 4 gets you 15 and 5 gets you 20.

The Scatter comes in 2 versions, and the rules (once again) don't explain the difference.

The Bat Bonus Modifier can kick in on any spin where Bonus symbols land. Each Bonus symbol that lands sends a bat flying into the castle above the reels.

If any bats made it inside by the end of the spin, a lightning strike may occur, and it either triggers the Bat Bonus modifier or changes the background state.

When the modifier triggers, a wave of bats flies out of the castle, and some crash into reels that don't already hold a Bonus symbol.

Each spot that gets hit turns into an extra Bonus symbol. You get at least 1 extra, which guarantees the Super Free Spins.

At the start of the round, the lowest value Monsters on the reels all upgrade to the next Monster up. Further upgrades depend on the starting state of the trail. From there the Hunters collect exactly as they do in Max Play.

During the round, a Monster Hunter may display a multiplier of 2x, 3x, 5x or 10x, and plain Hunters run at 1x with nothing shown. The multiplier only applies to the Monster prize the Hunter catches.

Any Monster Hunter that lands without a Monster in view locks in place. It stays on the reels until Monsters land or the Free Spins end, so a dead Hunter is really just a Hunter waiting for something to collect.

Every Hunter that lands also gets added to the trail. Every 3 on the trail activates the next upgrade, which is awarded once your current set of spins runs out.

Each upgrade bumps the lowest value Monsters left on the reels up 1 type and adds 10 Free Spins.

After 3 Hunters, Mummies become Werewolves. After 6, Werewolves become Frankenstein's Monsters, and after 9 they become Red Vampires. Fill the whole trail and you've banked 30 extra spins, with a board that keeps getting more expensive.

Super Free Spins

When the Bat Bonus modifier sends you into this feature, you get Super Free Spins and choose 1 or more upgrades on entry.

The options are seeding the trail from the start, raising the minimum Monster that can land, and setting a minimum multiplier for the Monster Hunters.

BUY BONUS AND ANTE BET:

For 100x your base bet, the Buy Bonus guarantees that 3 or more Bonus symbols spin in and trigger Free Spins. For 200x, you get Super Free Spins: the Bat Bonus modifier is guaranteed to trigger, and it brings the upgrades with it.

The Ante BetAn Ante Bet is an option that costs a percentage of your bet but increases your chances of landing triggering symbols that initiate a feature. goes by Golden Bet here. It costs 50% more, and it doubles your chance of triggering Free Spins. With Golden Bet on, any spin that lands 2 Bonus symbols gets a Bonus Respin.

The reels without a Bonus symbol spin again for a 2nd chance at the trigger. It works in both Standard and Max Play mode, but the paytable and the Monster awards don't grow with the bigger bet.

GAMBLE:

The game calls it Dual Gamble, and the button reads GAMBLE 5X+. It can be offered on any base game win, Monster symbol wins in Max Play mode included. You can set it to OFF, ON or 5X OR MORE.

On ON, it's offered after any base game win that didn't also trigger Free Spins. On 5X OR MORE, it only appears for wins worth at least 5x your base bet.

There are 2 wheels. The left wheel can multiply your current prize by 1.5x, 2x, 3x, 5x or 10x. The right wheel trades the prize for 5, 10, 15, 20 or 25 Free Spins, and turning a base game win into a Free Spins round is a neat trick I don't see often.

The plus and minus buttons change what you're playing for, and the wheel shows your odds of winning.

Both pointers spin. Green on your chosen wheel wins and updates the prize, and red ends the gamble with nothing.

It keeps going until you collect, lose, or hit the maximum prize on the cash wheel. The Free Spins wheel switches off once your prize is worth more than the highest Free Spins entry level.

Performance

Goddamn, there’s a lot going on in this spooky game. With so many moving parts, you might have rightfully expected that things would go wrong across a few thousand spins. Well, they didn’t.

Maximum Win

Put the max multiplier of 5,000x on the $50 top bet and the max win comes to $250,000. The minimum bet is $0.10.

Conclusion

The money is in the Monster Hunter collecting cash off the Monsters, and every extra Hunter on the board pays the full sum again.

Add Hunter multipliers and a trail that turns cheap Monsters into expensive ones, and Free Spins is where the real damage gets done.

The standard base game is thin by comparison. The Hunter never lands there, so your line pays top out with the Gravestone. The 500x Hunter line pay only exists in Free Spins and Max Play.

The max multiplier comes from a Hunter catching the top Gold Vampire value. By my math, a smaller Gold Vampire caught by a Hunter at the top multiplier gets you to the same number. Both routes depend on the rarest Monster tier.

At 94% RTPRTP stands for “Return to Player.” The RTP describes the total bet amount that a game returns to players over millions of spins, and that figure is represented by a percentage. Table games, such as Roulette, typically have higher RTPs than many slots.

, expect shorter sessions, so play in short bursts with a bankroll behind you.

Golden Bet charges 50% more per spin for twice the trigger chance, which makes each Free Spins trigger roughly 25% cheaper on average. I'd switch it on. Just remember the paytable and Monster values stay the same size.

The cheaper buy is the going rate for a Free Spins buy, so that's fair.

The Super buy doubles the price for 1 or more upgrades picked on entry (a seeded trail, better Monsters or a minimum Hunter multiplier), and that's a call for bigger bankrolls only.

Max Play costs the same as a normal spin, but it swaps every regular pay for a Pumpkin worth nothing. You get the Monster engine on every spin, and nothing breaks your fall on a dry run.

The Gamble is a call you make win by win, with the odds on the wheel and red taking everything.
