An Introduction to Daniel Negreanu’s Poker Strategy

Daniel Negreanu is a poker star who has an uncanny ability to guess, correctly, his opponent’s hand. Under his belt, or his wrist, are six World Series of Poker bracelets and two championship titles. Recently, Negreanu released a Masterclass where teaches his poker strategy over 38 sessions, for a fee of course. Here at Bitstarz we’re going to compile the key aspects of his approach into one easy to digest article, and for absolutely free – aren’t we good to you?

Do Not Show If You Do Not Have To

The cardinal sin of any poker player is to show his card when everyone has folded. What this does is it allows your opponents to get in your head and understand how you play. If you bluffed and you showed them that you did, they will never take your bait again. They will remember your betting pattern and your face if you do.

Do Not Bluff

On the subject of bluffing, Negreanu has stated in the past that he does not bluff, and does not recommend it. Bluffing, says Negreanu, is for amateurs who do not understand that it only takes one player on the table to call. If he does, you are dead in the water because you have nothing.

Furthermore, he elaborates that even if bluffing works, you need to set it up correctly, and this can be a challenge. An analogy he uses is that you could only tell your wife that you came from golf if you are wearing a golf attire, not an office suit. In poker, you cannot make your opponents believe you have a strong hand if you are fidgety, or if you have not been raising the bet pre-flop.

Do Play Small Ball

Daniel is a believer of what he calls ‘small ball poker’. This strategy involves winning small pots as much as you can, avoiding exposing yourself to large bets to protect your stack. He suggests that you implement this strategy early on in the part of the game when the blinds are still small.

Do Pay Attention to Tells

Poker is a simple game of who has the best hand, but it is also a deeply psychological game at the same time. You need to be able to tell what your opponents are thinking, and you can only do this if you pay attention to them in the first hour of the game. Remember all their ticks, their reflexes, movements, and what actions came with these movements. Later in the game you can use this to your advantage. If a guy stopped chewing his gum and raised a bet, and won, you now know that he has a good hand next time he stops chewing. And, if you have a bad hand, it makes sense to fold.

Just the Start

There is of course much more to a strategy than these small tips, but even little snippets such as these can help you hone your game and improve your odds of winning.
