Retromania Slot Review
Man, I'd love to own a second-hand store:
“I'm sorry sir - that old piece of junk is close to worthless, but to help, I'll give you $3.”
After buying it:
“Clyde – bring out another “Vintage retro S100 price-tag, please! Slap it on this piece of garbage and pop it into the window.”
Our obsession with retro items has caused a blurry line between old junk and valuable memorabilia. Nonetheless, it's a full-time hobby for some hipsters who walk around as the embodiment of another era – until they whip out their iPhone of course...
Retromania is an Endorphina video slot which taps into this bizarre phenomenon. It can be enjoyed on pretty much any non-retro modern device or platform (you see the ironic dig – I'm nasty that way).
Despite my misgivings, it was tough not feel swept up and transported to another time. A period where technology was limited but “cool" wasn't. This was all so groovy, and I was having a gas! (That 60's for having a good time – not for passing wind!)
Gameplay
Retromania is a high volatility 5 reel and 9 payline slot by Endorphina. The minimalistic icons consist primarily of “old tech”: typewriter, radio, telephone, camera, film (as in camera film) and a vinyl record.
The wild is a 60's gal who can substitute for all other symbols, except the typewriter and the bonus symbol. Oops yes – there's a bonus symbol, which is a gold star.
Unfortunately, there's not much retro about the controls, apart from a muted brown color. Up top, you can find Credits while down below is everything else needed: Bet. Menu (including Paytable and Advanced Autoplay options), Total Bet (plus adjustor), Auto, Spin and Lines.
Apparently, there was no Turbospin in the olden days…
Features
After each winning spin in regular play, you get a chance to gamble your profits with a “Take Risk” option. Choose a higher card than the dealer and your money is doubled, while a lower card will lose your profits.
Unique Features
There's a fun bonus game which is triggered by the star symbol, with 3,4 or 5 of these icons garnering you 1,2 or 3 tries at the Bonus Game respectively. Despite looking like the iconic board game Monopoly, it's essentially a roulette wheel ( or rectangle?). There are 3 center reels which spin and when stop, display are your allocated symbols. A white outline then spins around the roulette board and if it lands on on a corresponding symbol (to the ones assigned), you are paid out that amount. But, if you land on an X, you lose your next attempt.
Maximum Win
The maximum win amount in Retromania is 500 000 coins. Now that can buy A LOT of worthless junk!
Performance
The simplicity of the graphics and animation are somewhat limiting, but they're stylised enough to be impressive. The music will have to get your head bobbing while the sound effects keep the excitement going. I tried Retromania on a few devices and platforms with zero issues or lags.
Conclusion
Retromania is a niche offering, with limited features but a fantastic feel. The bonus game is a lotta fun and the winning potential is massive. So, if you wanna be a 60's hippie or baby boomer for a day, give this game a chance. PEACE!
